"Casey at the
Bat" is a poem written in 1888 by
Ernest Thayer. A dramatic narrative
about a baseball game, the poem
became popular on the vaudeville
circuit, and has become one of the
best-known poems in American
literature. The Disney version of
the poem "Casey At The Bat" adapted
from the ballad of the same title as
dramatized in the Walt Disney motion
picture "Make Mine Music," was released
in 1946.
In 1932, marketing genius, Kay Kamen merchandising executive, for the
Walt Disney Company started to promoted
Mickey Mouse. Soon, Kamen began
licensing Walt Disney characters
producing everything from dolls, lunch
boxes, toys... and this pencil
sharpener in 1946. Walt Disney plastic
pencil sharpeners with full color
illustrations of Panchito, Donald Duck,
Joe Carioca, Pablo, Pluto, Peter, Brér
Bear, and Casey. The 1.5 diameter,
bottle cap shaped pencil sharpeners,
sold for about 19¢, two for 35¢, in
1946.
