1909 OAL baseball Ban Johnson Stamp

1901-1907 Reach OAL Baseball
1910 Reach OAL Baseball

NOTES:

The sweet spot stamping, "OFFICIAL AMERICAN LEAGUE," the Reach logo on the top north panel, and the bottom south specs panel, "Warranted" "5 oz. 9 in." and "1 oz. Rubber" is relatively the same as the years before 1901-1907. Some baseballs made in 1908 and in 1909 have the league president's Ban Johnson signature stamped on the east panel with the year "1908" or "1909" accordingly, below the name.

Another distinction for baseballs made for the 1908 and 1909 seasons is the "PATENT APPLIED FOR."  For the 1908 baseballs the stamp is usually found on the east panel. The baseballs made for the 1909 season have the "PATENT APPLIED FOR" stamp below "1 OZ. Rubber on the Specs panel. The patent no. 917,658 application was filed, and applied for on September 30, 1907, for the rubber center. It was granted on April 6, 1909. It is not until 1910 that the baseballs are stamped with the April 6, 1909 patent, on the sweet spot below American League. Theses unique stampings that appear on the 1908 and 1909 baseballs are the only way to distinguish them from the 1901-1907 baseballs.
