This celluloid catcher Wind-up toy was
given the nickname "Bill Dickey" by
collectors because of the Yankees
interlocking "NY" on the sleeve. Bill
Dickey was a
Hall Of Fame catcher who played
for the New York Yankees from; 1928 to
1943, served in the military in 1944 &
1945, and finished his career in 1946.
The toy is usually dated to 1946,
Dickey's last season but, there is no
dating on the box, and the toy is embossed
with "Made In Occupied Japan" on
the back. Items stamped "Occupied
Japan," can be dated to 1945-1952.
There are two different boxes that the toy came in which can be an
indication the toy was issued in
different years. One is a picture box,
illustrating a catcher in action, and
reads "Nice Catch" above, with stadium
grandstands in the background. The
other a plain box that has a stamp that
reads "Made In Occupied Japan"
There is no indication on the box or
toy that the catcher is Bill Dickey, or
a Yankee, outside of the interlocking
"NY" on the sleeve.
After winding up the toy with the accompanying Key the toy spins on its
wheels under the green base. The arms
were made to move up when the catcher
stops; but these toys are often
found with the elastic string holding them
stretched out, slightly separated from
the body, and does not work properly.
