Founded by Hazelle Hedges Rollins
in 1932, Hazelle Inc., became the
worlds largest manufacturer of
marionettes and finger hand puppets by 1975 when she retired. Hazelle Rollins
designed over three hundred puppets
and she held three patents improving the
construction of marionettes including
the airplane style marionette control,
designed for ease of manipulation.
Building off the company's success with
marionettes following the popularity of
the Howdy Doody Show, Hazlle expanded
the business by designing and
manufacturing hand puppets. Located in Kansas City MO, the factory
made marionettes, hand puppets and
finger puppets until it's closing in
the 1980's.
The baseball series of hand puppets were made some time after 1954, and through to 1966. The set might have
been limited to just the four teams
pictured as there haven't been any
others teams to surface on the market
over the years;
the Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals,
Baltimore Orioles, and the Philadelphia
Phillies. The factory stock head molds
were used for different puppets. The
Cincinnati Reds mascot head was also
used for a "Community Workman" Series
of puppets that included a police
officer. The Phillies, Boy with
baseball cap head was also used for the
"Gas Station Attendant." The Baseball
series heads were painted to fit in
with the baseball team that it
represented, and the team colors were
used for the fabric.
