The Whirly Bird Play Catch Game made
by Innovation Industries Inc., was
endorsed by Warren Spahn in 1958. The
cover pictures the Milwaukee Braves
Hall of Fame great in full uniform,
playing with the Whirly Bird play catch
game. Below the image reads "Warren
Spahn, Milwaukee Braves World Famous
South Paw Enjoys Playing Whirly Bird.
Have fun indoors or outdoors."
Promoting "A FAMILY GAME FOR CHILDREN
and ADULTS" the box also illustrates a
family playing with the Whirly Bird
Game. The box also notes that it is
"100% SAFE, Plenty of action, AS SEEN
ON TV"
The equipment stored in the contents of the box includes two disc-like
targets, 1 point on the outside green
ring, 2 point white ring, 3 point
yellow ring and a red 4 points center
bulls eye. The back of the target has a
strap to secure to the hand, which also
features a hand illustration to show
how to use it. The Whirly Bird
projectile dart has a feathered
weighted rubber ball, fashioned at
angles to create a rotation or "Whirly"
action after it is thrown and descends
onto the target, with a rubber suction
cup at the bottom to adhere by suction
to the target, indicating a score in
playing the game.
The original White & Blue target, patented in 1956 only had 3 point rings,
and it was sold without the Warren
Spahn endorsement. The game was also
sold for a number of years later, into
the 1960's, without the Spahn
endorsement. A common
flaw with games being sold in todays
market, over the years due to
age, the rubber suction cup on the end
of the Whirly Bird darts harden, and
lose suction.
