In 1960
the J.B. Williams Company enlisted Gil
Hodges - "Great first baseman of the
world champion Los Angeles Dodgers," to
promote Aqua Velva. Offered in the
promotion was the Gil Hodges 1960
Baseball Schedule and Fact Book, a
64-page handy pocket-size book for easy
reference. The book was made available
free when you bought a bottle of medium
size Williams Ice Blue Aqua Velva.
The
1960 Williams Ice Blue Aqua Velva color
Sunday comics newspaper advertisement
features an illustration of Gil Hodges
holding the 1960 Baseball Schedule and
Fact Book. Below the Aqua Velva ad, on
the full newspaper page, is a "Hit a
homer... but scored an error!"
comic strip, promoting Vaseline Hair
Tonic. At the bottom is a Pepsodent ad.
This full page combination of ads
appeared in Sunday comic strip sections
across the country in April of 1960.
In 1961,
Roger Maris endorsed Aqua Velva in
similar Sunday comic ads but
without a premium.
