In 1961 Roger Maris' 61 home run
season translated into dollars. He more
than doubled the money he earned
hitting home runs for the New York
Yankees, through endorsements. It was
estimated by Maris' off-the field agent
Frank Scott, that Maris would earn
$300.000 in endorsements and royalties
over the following three years after he
hit home run number 60. He would earn
$100.000 in the winter of 1961 alone.
The J.B. Williams Company got the jump on everyone, signing Roger Maris to
push Aqua Velva, at the
start of the 1961 baseball season. The
previous season, 1960, Gil Hodges of
the World Champion Dodgers, endorsed
the product. Consumers received a free
copy of Gil Hodges 1960 Baseball and
Fact Book when they bought Williams
Aqua Velva.
The
1961 Williams Ice Blue Aqua Velva ad
campaign featuring Roger Maris appeared
in both newspapers and magazines. The
ad appeared in the Sunday comic strip
section of newspapers throughout the
country in April and October. The color
ad illustrated Roger Maris stating; "Roger Maris Star Yankee Outfielder Says:
For a Really Different
After-Shave Sensation-Try Williams Ice
Blue Aqua Velva! It Cools without
stinging! Has a brisk manly scent!"
There were two different black & white magazine ads which measured about 5
by 5 inches. One pictured Maris, the
other featured an illustration like the
one in the newspaper ad. Both had the
same "Roger Maris says:" statement.
