This Sun-Maid Raisins Mickey Mantle
Fielders Glove promotion appeared in
newspapers nation wide in 1971. Send
$5.50 with a premium seal from any pack
of Sun-Maid Raisins and receive a
Rawlings fielders glove with "Mickey
Mantles personal signature." The ad
does not list the model number of the
glove you received, but the
illustration suggests that it was a
Rawlings Mickey Mantle GJ99, which was
listed in Rawlings 1970-1971 catalogs
for $9.95. The Rawlings GJ99 Mickey
Mantle fielder's glove was a
conventional model, cut on new patterns
for 1971.
The
Rawlings GJ99 was also used in
other promotions for other companies
during
that era.
The full page newspaper ad measures 10.5 inches by 14.5 inches. To the
right of the ad towards the inner-fold
is a "Tweety-Pie" comic strip. The
comics that shared the page with the ad
varies depending on the area the
newspaper was published. Most were
printed in black and white. The
Sun-Maid ad headlines "STOP! GET YOUR
MICKEY MANTLE FIELDER'S GLOVE!" It
illustrates a boy catching a pack of
Sunmaid raisins with his Mickey Mantle
baseball glove. At the bottom is the
glove offer mail in coupon. The offer
expired on December 1, 1971. To the
right of the coupon the ad instructs
the reader to "Look for the Sun-Maid
Raisins GO/STOP display at your
grocers. It's where you stop for go!"
