In 1878 Spalding won the
contract to manufacture baseballs for
the National League. In 1876 when the
National League was formed, and 1877, a
Varity of baseballs were used.
Baseballs made by J.D. Shibe & Co. of
Philadelphia were commonly used. The
balls were produced according to
National Regulations, 9.14 inches, 5
1/4 ounces.
The 1878-1882 baseballs Feature the Spalding Trademark logo on the top
panel. The sweet spot reads "OFFICIAL
LEAGUE BALL" with "ADOPTED BY THE
NATIONAL LEAGUE" arched below. The
specs panel at the bottom of the
1878-1882 reads "9 IN.-5 OZ.,
WARRANTED" and beneath that "A.G.
SPALDING & BROS., CHICAGO, NEW YORK &
PHILA." surrounded by an oval outline.
National League President
William A. Hulbert,
one of the founders of the National
League, passed away in 1882. Arthur
Soden, was named to succeed Hulbert as
league president on an interim basis,
but his permanent successor was Abraham
G. Mills in 1883. The Official League Ball
adopted by the National League
for the 1883 season remains the same as the 1878-1882
Official League ball but features a patented Feb 27, 83 (U.S.
Patent 272984) stamp at the top of the
Spalding Trademark logo. The patent was
granted to
Benjamin F. Shibe, of Philadelphia, for
the improvement
in the manufacture of baseballs.
