NOTES:

The 1883-1889, Official League Ball was adopted by the National League for the 1883 season. The top panel Spalding logo remains the same as the 1878-1882 Official League ball but features a patented Feb 27, 83 (U.S. Patent 272984) stamp at the top of the Spalding Trademark logo. The patent was granted to Benjamin F. Shibe, of Philadelphia, for the improvement in the manufacture of baseballs. Shibe was an American sporting goods and baseball executive and part owner of the Philadelphia Athletics from 1901 to 1922.

The first ball issued in 1883 features "Adopted by the National League" arched below "Official League Ball" as issued in 1978-1882. Most likely in 1885, when President of the National League Nicholas Young took office, "Adopted by the National League" features less of an arch, as pictured above, and the size of the stitching increases. The specs panel at the bottom of the 1883-1884 reads "9 IN.-5 OZ.,  WARRANTED" and beneath that "A.G. SPALDING & BROS., CHICAGO, NEW YORK & PHILA." surrounded by an oval outline. The later ball has "WARRENTED" above, "9 IN 5 OZ." and also features an "ADOPTED BY THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION" stamp
