Item Details

1965-1969

MANUFACTURER
Bemis Manufacturing Company
Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin

NOTES:

Headquartered in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin the Bemis Manufacturing Company dates back to 1901. The company manufactured toilet seats, molded wood products and wood dimensions. In 1965 the company opened up a woodworking plant in Crandon, WI where they made items such as Bowling pins, parts for sleds, croquet balls, and baseball bats. By 1969 the Crandon Woodworking plant was sold off, and the manufacturing of baseball bats was discontinued.

The Hickory Stick produced and patented by the Bemis Manufacturing Co. was the result of extensive research by Bemis' engineering staff, the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory and the University of Wisconsin baseball coach Art Mansfiels. Composed of five pieces of hickory wood, the Laminated baseball bat was used on an experimental basis at the University of Wisconsin at the start of the 1965 season. Laminated equipment was outlawed in professional baseball and previsions in the college rules allowed laminated bats.

At the time most bats were made of ash. The center core and handle stock for the Hickory Stick were carefully selected for straight grain by specially designed equipment. This insured maximum handle strength, reduced failure, and created longer bat life. The High quality of hickory used was responsible for high shock resistance. The Hickory Sticks do not crack as easily as the conventional ash bats.

The center brand Reads: "The Original HICKORY STICK By Bemis" centered inside an outline of a baseball diamond, with bases. Below the diamond reads: "SHEBOYGAN FALLS WISCONSIN" on the 3rd base side and "PAT. PENDING REG. U.S. PAT. OFF." on the 1st base side. Official Little League and full sized bat models include KILLEBREW, MATHEWS, MARIS, ROBINSON, and KALINE STYLE, block letter player endorsements. On the barrel to right of the player style branding is the "TRUE Hickory LAMINATED" star branding. The baseball bats also cane with a manufacture tag (pictured above & Below)
