Benny Kauff came up with the New York
Highlanders in 1912, played in the
Federal League through 1915 and
finished his career with the New York
Giants from 1916-20. Kauff was banned
for life from baseball in 1921 for his
implications in a car theft ring. Benny
Kauff was acquitted of the charges but
nonetheless, Baseball Commissioner
Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis refused
to reinstate him. In a letter to Kauff,
Landis said that even though he was
acquitted, the trial revealed serious
questions about his character and
reputation that would raise questions
about baseball's integrity if he were
ever allowed to play again.
Back in the day these bats were advertised as having a picture of the
ballplayer, or a transfer. Today decal
bats are highly desired by collectors.
It is common to find bats with just a
trace of the decal, or totally worn
away. The percentage of the decal
remaining will dictate the value. It is
difficult to estimate the value of a
decal bat with less than 80% of the
decal.
It is important to have most of the
players name or face, with less than
80% of the decal remaining. The grade
could be lowered by one for each 20%
missing, and significantly drop in
value accordingly. The percentage of
the value lowered could vary based on
rarity, and player demand. The color or
amount of fading could also be a
factor. The grade of the decal coupled
with the overall condition and display
of the bat will be the final and
deciding factor.
The dash-dot-dash center brand dates it to about 1917-1920. The decal on
this bat is about 60% intact and the
image of Benny Kauff batting is
partial. A decal bat like this with a
strong center brand and the overall
condition of the bat being in about
very good condition, might have an
estimated value of about $200.-$400. Players
in high demand, as Joe Jackson, or Ty
Cobb and other Hall of Famers, will
sell at a much higher rate, with values
ranging from $3,000.-$7,000. for bats
with decals 100% intact.
