In 1855 Christian Buhl retired from the F & C H Buhl Co., a hat & fur business that he was involved in with his older brother Frederick Buhl. Christian Buhl then established a large and successful wholesale hardware firm with partner Charles Ducharme. Christian Buhl served as Detroit's Mayor in 1860, and 1861. When partner Charles Ducharme died in 1873, Buhl brought his sons into the business and renamed it Buhl Sons & Co. The company became one of the nations largest Hardware wholesalers, and was sold off in 1960.

The Buhl sons Co. Hardware Supply wholesale catalog featured general merchandise. Hardware, Tools, building, Automobile, & Electrical Supplies, Home Furnishings, a full line of Sporting Goods that included baseball equipment. The catalog featured baseball bats made by Hillerich & Bradsby Co., Louisville Slugger, who also made the privately branded Buhl Sons Co. Detroit, baseball bat.
