In 1855 Christian Buhl retired
from the F & C H Buhl Co., a hat & fur
business that he was involved in with
his older brother Frederick Buhl.
Christian Buhl then established a large
and successful wholesale hardware firm
with partner Charles Ducharme.
Christian Buhl served as Detroit's
Mayor in 1860, and 1861. When partner
Charles Ducharme died in 1873, Buhl
brought his sons into the business and
renamed it Buhl Sons & Co. The
company became
one of the nations largest Hardware
wholesalers, and was sold off
in 1960.
The Buhl sons Co. Hardware Supply wholesale catalog featured general
merchandise. Hardware, Tools, building,
Automobile, & Electrical Supplies, Home
Furnishings, a full line of Sporting
Goods that included baseball equipment.
The catalog featured baseball bats made
by Hillerich & Bradsby Co., Louisville
Slugger, who also made the privately
branded Buhl Sons Co. Detroit, baseball
bat.
Inside at the top of the oval center brand features "BUHL SONS CO." with
"DETROIT" below. The bottom of the oval
reads "M.A. ZIMMERMAN." The center of
the oval has the name of the bat model,
with a line below it. Models include
the "DEFIANCE" pictured above, and the
"PROFESSIONAL."
