Folsom Arms was a retail distributor
of firearms and sporting goods dating
back to the late 1800's. Sometime
during the 1890's, through an agreement
with A.G. Spalding, they branched out
into athletic equipment. By the 1920's
the Folsom catalog featured Louisville
Slugger baseball bats, who also
manufactured bats for Folsom, using the
Folsom Sporting Goods High Quality logo
as the center brand. This logo was also
used on other Folsom sporting Good
products.
The "REGULATION"
barrel stamping on this Folsom No. 215 baseball
bat matches exactly to the "Regulation" Brand used
by the Hillerich & Bradsby Co. on
the No. 90 "Winner" baseball bats
that they made for a
number of hardware stores.
The H & D Folsom Arms Co. was located
at 312 Broadway, NY, and had their
warehouse in Yonkers. The shipping
label pictured below was for an order
of 6 Folsom Sporting Goods, baseball
bats, shipped to the Standard Hardware
store in Richmond Virginia.
The Shipping label on this box could
date as far back as 1922, when in 1921,
Postmaster General, Will H. Hays order
allowed articles of merchandise to be
accepted for mailing at the
fourth-class rate of postage, If properly
labeled with "Postmaster this parcel
may be opened for postal inspection if
necessary" I am loosely dating
these bats to the 1920's -1940's. Folsom arms closed shop sometime
around the 1950's.
