NOTES:

Walter Keith and William G. Simmons had been Junior Partners since 1892 in the firm of J.H. Fall & Company. In June 1898, J. H. Fall & Company was dissolved and a new J. H. Fall was incorporated, owned solely by J. H. Fall. Now the future began to take shape for the Junior Partners. Mr. Keith and Mr. Simmons established the Keith-Simmons & Company to handle hardware. They located five doors north of Union Street on College Street. Keith-Simmons & Company remained on College Street until 1903 at which time they moved to 316-318 Union Street.

In 1910, the store of J. H. Fall Company burned. Mr. Fall retired from the retail business. Keith-Simmons took over the employees from the J. H. Fall Retail Store, many of whom were well known to the two business partners from their earlier years with Fall. In 1916, looking toward providing better service to customers, the Keith-Simmons firm purchased the entire retail and supply business of the Gray & Dudley Hardware Company. Keith-Simmons & Company then became incorporated in 1925 under the laws of the State of Tennessee.

Recognized as being one of the largest hardware companies in the South, the company carried a large line of hardware, edge tools, mill supplies, house furnishings, automotive supplies, saddlery, and Sporting goods. Their 1925 catalog devoted 38 pages to sporting goods, that included baseballs, gloves and bats made by the A.J. Reach sporting goods company. The Keith-Simmons & Co. baseball bat branding depicted a Cat inside an oval. Outside the oval at the top reads; "KEITH-SiMMONS & CO." below the oval, "NASHVILLE" with the number "5" (model number).
