From about 1927-1937 the Sears &
Roebuck Co. carried an inexpensive line
of baseball bats that featured the
"High Quality Bats" label. Bat models
included;
The WLS "World's Largest
Store," which also had a number of sub
models,
Knox-All 1715 Junior League, and
this No. 1705 Regulation College League
bat. Sears used 1600 catalog numbers up
until
1926, them starting in 1927 the
bats were given a 1700 catalog
designation. The 1700 model numbers
were exclusive to Sears baseball bats
even after 1961, when sears introduced
the Ted Williams brand of sporting
goods, replacing the J.C. Higgins
brand.
A 1930 catalog shows the J.C. Higgins
Sears brand with the 1702-1707 model
numbers, and states that the bats were
made for Sears by "The maker of the
famous Louisville Slugger Bats." In the
1927 catalog the bat with the 1705
designation was used for a bat made in
the style that Ty Cobb used, but with
the WLS branding. In 1930 the 1705 bat
which also had a WLS label was
advertised as similar in style to the
bat Babe Ruth used. It's more than
likely the the College League bat dates
to after 1930.
Starting in
1908 until 1961 Sears, Roebuck &
Company sold a wide variety of sporting
goods, under their standard brand name "J. C.
Higgins." John Higgins was the manager
of the headquarters' office
bookkeepers. In 1908 John Higgins
consented to Sears the use of his name
for a new line of sporting goods. Since
he did not have a middle initial, Sears
added the "C."
