This is a circa 1926-1934, Earl
'Sparky' Adams, Spalding 'Hand Turned'
Professional model No. PF baseball bat.
Hand Turned, appearing above the
Spalding "Ball and Diamond" center
brand is indicative of Spalding
pro-model bats. The only Sparky Adams
bat featured in the catalogs, is the
"Sparky Adams Special" a store model
bat offered from 1927-1932. These bats
were all produced with the
circular Spalding baseball
trademark logo center brand, with
'SPARKY ADAMS' along the top of the
perimeter of the bordered circle,
'SPECIAL" at the bottom, and his full
signature endorsement on the barrel of
the bat.
The barrel of this bat was corked. A corked bat is a baseball bat that has
been altered, usually by drilling a 1
inch hole, about 6-10 inches deep, then
filled with cork or other lighter, less
dense substances to make the bat
lighter. It is believed to gives a
hitter a quicker swing improving the
hitter's timing. The use of corked bats
was fairly common in the 1920's,
especially in the minor leagues. There
were countless disputes reported to
league presidents across the country.
