This is a Circa 1939 TruSport No.
5 baseball bat sold by Edw. K Tryon of
Philadelphia. TruSport
was a brand name of merchandise sold by
Edw. K Tryon of Philadelphia,
established in the 1811. They sold a
large variety of Items, from firearms
to Knives, Bicycles, Skates, sports
equipment, Baseball gloves and bats.
This bat appears in their 1939 catalog
along with Louisville Slugger bats. The
font used for the word "Special"
branded on the barrel is also found on
Louisville Slugger bats made in the
same time frame.
The
baseball bats were made by Hillerich & Bradsby, then branded with
the private TruSport PHILA PA, Center brand to be
sold in the Edw. K. Tryon catalog, and
Hardware store. The Earlier Edw. K.
Tryon baseball bats, with the Tyron
Keystone logo (pictured below left) have the same ornate
engraving that Hillerich & Bradsby
used before 1932. Baseball bats dated to the
1900-1910 era such as the "Old Hickory"
logo reads EDW. K. TRYON Co. PHILA" in
the tail of the "Y" in Hickory. In 1962
Edw. K. Tryon was acquired by Banner Industries and their
line of sporting good products logo just reads Tryon.
