The Zinn Beck Bat Company was
established
in 1920 by Zinn Beck, a major league ball player
that played with the St. Louis
Cardinals, from 1913-1916, and the New
York Yankees in 1918. From 1920 to 1922
Beck managed the Columbia Comers in
Columbia, and
from 1923 to 1925 Beck managed
the Greenville Spinners in Greenville,
South Carolina. His brother Garnett
Beck, made Laminated bats for his
Superior Bat Co. The brothers opened a factory in Columbia, South
Carolina, in 1920.
In 1922 the company became a
corporation, then moved to Greenville,
SC, in 1923. The Zinn
Beck Bat Co. which was producing 3,000
bats a day, was sold to Zenas C Grier
for about $50,000., in 1927. The name was
then changed
to Grier Mfg Co.
It has been documented through the
discovery of side written bats brought
to H&B, and photo Identification, that
the Special, Extra Special, and 100
Diamond Ace, center brand bats were
turned for professional use. The bats
were factory finished with special
attention given to the handle end of
the bats to meet player specifications.
These assorted models of famous
players bats were also made available
to the retail market, and are listed in
Zinn Beck catalogs.
Zinn Beck applied their player identifiers, with the phrase “Type of Bat
used by” followed by the players last
name, in block letters, below the center brand of
the
bat. Some appear on the barrel. Players
include; "Type of bat used by," Cobb,
Ruth, Traynor, Hornsby, Sisler,
Bottomley, Cochrane, Cuyler, Johnson,
full name models include, Ty Cobb, Babe
Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bob Meusel, Cy
Williams, Al Simmons, Mickey Medwick,
and Joe Jackson.
Retail models also include; 200
series, Big League, No. 300 Junior Ace,
No. 400 Home Run Model, No. 6B
Beck's Special, No. 1 Scout, and the
Indoor No. 8. The bats with the
Columbia, South Carolina, branding are
the earliest and very rare.
