Endorsed
by Lou Gehrig in 1934, Goudey created
the Knot Hole League Of America, a new collecting
club that rewarded members that saved
Big League wrappers with "New Free
Baseball Premiums." All you had to do
was send in twenty
Big League wrappers,
with 3¢ in stamps, and you became a
member. Goudey sent you; one Knot Hole Badge
(for your coat or shirt) one Big League
Premium book, a
Knot Hole League fold-out
brochure, and one Knot Hole membership
card.
The serial numbered, blank back "Knot
Hole League of America" membership card
issued in 1934 measures 2.75 by 4.25
inches. It featured the Lou
Gehrig Knot Hole League Of America
emblem on the left with a Lou Gehrig
facsimile signature, President, By
arrangement with Christy Walsh, below.
Christy Walsh was for acting as Babe
Ruth's agent, and is considered to be
the first baseball sports agent. Bob
Devlin, Secretary facsimile signature
is on the bottom right. In the center
is a line for the member to sign to
certify that the member "has been duly
elected a member and is entitled to all
privileges of the Knot Hole League Of
America."
Lou
Gehrig was removed as president in 1935
and the membership cards issued that
year features a new Knot Hole League Of
America emblem, with the word
"Official" replacing Gehrig's name. A
Bill Devlin, President, facsimile
signature is now featured at the bottom
left, with a new secretary on the
right. The certify-ine for the member's
name is dated to the year ending
December 31, 1935, and the member's
signature is on the far right.
