NOTES:

Thirty-years after the first commemorative baseball postage stamp, was issued in 1939, the Post Office issued it's second. A 6-cent postage stamp marking the 100th anniversary of Professional Baseball was issued. The first day ceremonies was held on September 24, 1969 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The early game of baseball was strictly amateur until the mid-1860s when a few cities, eager to have outstanding teams, offered salary inducements to star players. The first completely professional team in baseball with each player receiving a salary was formed in Cincinnati, the Red Stockings, in 1869. The stamp to honor the 100th anniversary of pro ball was designed by Alex Ross of Ridgefield, Conn. It depicts a right-handed batter in white uniform, red cap and black sweatshirt. The foreground is green and the background yellow.

The 1969 Professional Baseball postage stamps were sold in panes of 50 stamps. A "Pane" is the unit into which a full press sheet is divided before sale at post offices. A “sheet of stamps” is more properly called a pane.

First Day Covers were made available to the public by sending addressed envelopes with a money order for the stamps to the postmaster, Cincinnati Ohio 45202. The outside envelop should have been marked "First Day Covers Baseball Stamp." A "First Day Cover" is an envelope or card which has been postmarked and used (canceled) on the first day of issue. In this instance, the "Circular Date Stamp" The round part of a postmark contained the place of cancellation, and date; "Cincinnati OH, SEP 24 1969"

The 3.75 by 6.5 inch "Official First Day Covers" which featured sketches of ballplayers on the left, included; Mickey Mantle (pictured below) Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Ty Cobb, Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson,  Sandy Koufax, Stan Musial, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, and Satchel Paige.
