ballplayers are highly sought after.
It's a personal look into the private
lives of the players we idolize. Ty
Cobb often corresponded with a close
friend and turkey hunting buddy, Capt. Robert Brannen. There are many examples in the market.
The "American League Ball Club. Cleveland" postcard
above is dated
by the cancellation stamp to 1915, and
reads: Here is where we play in
Cleveland, pretty good sized park and
quite a few people. My regards to Mrs.
B. Hope you all well - Ty -" Most
ty Cobb personal letters are Simply
signed "Ty" The next post card has a
rarely signed "T.R. Cobb" and could
have a higher value.
The "Tri-State Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis Tenn." Postcard below is
dated by the cancellation stamp to
1915, and reads: "Well here I am on my
way to Detroit by easy stages every
jump will now be towards Detroit where
we open on 14th april. I hope you &
mrs. Brennen are well. wish I could
hear those turkey yelping in the
morning my regards to Katie. T.R Cobb"
The "German U Boat Deutschland Largest In The World And Her
Commander - Captain Koenig Arriving
Baltimore Hatbor - July 10th 1916." postcard below reads: "How would you like to
take a voyage on this boat. Am counting
the days to November. Hope you & mrs.
Brennen are well. Ty" The
cancellation date on the postcard is
not legible, and the front has an
historic date of "July 10. 1916." The
postage can be used to approximate the
date of the postcard, using the chart
in the bottom left column.
The postcard has a 1 cent stamp. The postcard rate was increased from 1
cent to 2 cents in 1917 as a wartime
measure. When World War I ended at the
end of 1918 the rate was lowered to its
pre-War level of one cent, until 1952.
