NOTES:

Marathon was a privately branded line of sporting goods that was sold in the Montgomery Ward catalog. Advertised as a "Catcher's League mask," this Marathon 60-4409 catcher's mask dates to about the mid to late 1920's and into the early 1930's. The frame was  constructed with black enameled reinforced steel wire, using the electric weld method introduced in 1911. The frame features a "curved clear view style" AKA Google eye space which was slowly phased out through the 1920's and into the 1930's.

Full length wrap around face padding becomes more common in the 1920's. The leather Chin pad is separate from the one piece "Cheek & Forehead pads" and both are laced to the frame. The older masks used wire ties. The adjustable elastic head strap is attached to the frame.  The "REG.U.S.PAT.OFF" Marathon Shield logo featured on the chin pad is dated to the 1920's through to 1934. The Shield logo is seemingly identical to the era before but the Marathon brand name was arched and reads "TRADEMARK" below, as pictured on the "Baseball Mask" box.
