These "Goggle Eye," Loop & Clip
construction catchers masks were made
with heavy wire steel frames. The Loop
& Clip method was used before the
introduction of electric weld frames in
1911, and was slowly phased out by the
mid to late 1920's. This mask features full length
face padding which was patented in
1906, and became more common
in the late 1910's through the 1920's.
The mask also features a padded chin
rest as opposed to a molded chin strap
made of a simple piece of leather. Chin
Padding starts to appear around 1914
and gained popularity into the 1920s. The padding on this
mask is secured to the frame by wire.
Full length face padding laced to the
frame becomes more common in the
1920's.
The Wright and Ditson Manufacturers tag
on this mask predates it to 1918, when
the Victor Sporting Goods Company
consolidated with the Wright & Ditson
Company. The two companies maintained
two manufacturing facilities, Victor's
Springfield, Massachusetts factory and
Wright & Ditson's in Boston. All
sporting goods produced from these
facilities thereafter were stamped with
a new Victor, Wright & Ditson logo.
