This Mickey Mantle Game Used 89A
Adirondack baseball bat is from the
1960 season. The year Mantle led the
American League with 40 Home Runs. The
most famous came on September 10th
during a visit to Detroit, that cleared
the right-field roof of Tiger Stadium
and was subsequently estimated to have
traveled a distance of 643 feet.
This thirty-five and a half inch (35.5"), thirty-two and a half ounce
(32.6 oz.) war club exhibits multiple
ball marks, cleat divots, rack streaks
and a light coating of pine tar on the
cracked handle. Two star shapes are
stamped into the knob end for reasons
unknown, invisible upon standard
display.
A letter of provenance from the son of Yankee Stadium television equipment
operator attests that the bat was
fished from a barrel of broken bats in
the back of the Yankees dugout. Several
copies of photographs picturing the
consignor's father working at New York
City ballparks are included. LOA from
PSA/DNA, GU 9. Letter of provenance
from son of WPIX television equipment
operator. This bat sold for $43,200. at
Heritage Auctions.
