1940 Reach Canada Base Mitt

This is a Circa 1940 Reach Canada Junior Baseman's Mitt. The Junior models are similar in construction to the higher priced model only smaller in size. This golden brown, full leather lined base mitt has a laced outer edge. The wide leather back strap has a lace adjustment, and would have had "adjustable lacing at thumb" which basically means a strand of lace strung between the thumb & forefinger that can be untied and retied to close the gap. This would sought of act as a "web" The back strap features the white cloth patch with the Reach "SIGN OF QUALITY" logo and reads "TRADE MARK REG. CAN.PAT.OFF" at the bottom.

A.G. Spalding bought out the A.J. Reach company in the 1890's. A.J. Reach stayed intact, and was still in competition with Spalding when they opened a factory in Brantford, Ont. Canada in 1913. Both business co-existed for a number of years when in 1927, Spalding was named as a successor to A.J. Reach in Canada and took over the Reach plant, whereas the Reach company was formed and continued in its place.
