During the 1961 season, both Mickey Mantle, and Roger Maris were on pace
to challenge Babe Ruth's 1927
single-season home run record. In 1927
Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs, and
teammate Lou Gehrig hit 47, for a
record 107 round-trippers. The press
dubbed them the "Home Run Twins."
In 1961 Maris
would go on to break Ruth's record, and
with Mickey Mantle's 54 home runs, the
M&M Boys set a new "Home Run Twins"
record with 115.
The 1961 home run race sparked a marketing frenzy that included products
such as; pennants, button, T-Shirts,
Sweatshirts, and this Maris-Mantle
“Home Run Twins” children's baseball
cap. The nylon-like cap had a retail
price of $1.00, and was offered for
sale in both red and navy-blue
versions. A 2.25" x 3.5" color patch
affixed to the front of the cap
displays black & white images of Roger
Maris, and Mickey Mantle on each side
of a baseball diamond with facsimile
signatures. The bottom reads, "Home Run
Twins, Copyright 1961."
The inner black leather sweatband has an attached tag that reads;
"Official, ***, Maris & Mantle Home Run
Hitting Cap, Copyright 1961." The
stretch elasticized back fits any
child's head Sizes 6 Through 6 5/8.
