From 1956 to 1959 the New York Yankees
held Newark Youth Day at Yankee
Stadium. The first, August 11, 1956,
some 2,800 youngsters from New Jersey
city traveled to Yankee Stadium via a
motorcade of 28 buses, to watch a game
as guests of Yankee President Dan
Topping. Youth Day was inaugurated in
1956 following the Yankee team trip to
Newark commemorating the 10th
anniversary of a radio and television
sponsorship by P. Ballantine and Sons
Newark brewery. On June 12, 1956 Newark
celebrated "Yankee day" with the
American League champions parading
through town in open convertibles.
On September 14, 1957, 1,367
youngsters accompanied by 133 adults
from Newark were treated to a Yankee
game and an "autograph Photo" of Mickey
Mantle. The same photo used by the
Yankees as a mailer to satisfy Mickey
Mantle autograph requests; but, "Newark
Youth Day Yankee Stadium September 14,
1957" was added to the top left corner.
The blank backed 5" x 7" black & white
photo features a Mickey Mantle
facsimile autograph with
a "Best Wishes" salutation. The
picture was also used for
Mickey Mantle's
Holiday Inn gift-shop photos and
postcards in 1958.
