"A stirring march and two step,"
William Hartz of Carnegie Pennsylvania
wrote the words and music, for "Husky
Hans," then organized a band of
marching children to sing the praise of
Honus Wagner. The music was published
as an homage to Wagner by his hometown
newspaper, the Carnegie Union. The
sheet music went on sale for .25˘ at
music stores on October 29, 1904. The
sheet music was advertised in the
Carnegie Union newspaper as "the
greatest souvenir of the national game
ever placed on the market." The sheet
music was later arranged for orchestra,
and appeared on several of the
Pittsburgh theater programs. The bottom
of this sheet music reads "Orchestra
.75˘ Band .50˘"
The cover title page pictures a 4"x7.5"
full length portrait of the greatest of
all baseball players, Honus Wagner, in
full Pittsburgh Pirates uniform,
holding baseball bat. Featured
below the picture is a facsimile
inscribed autograph, "Yours Truly Hans
Wagner." The page also notes: "RESP.
Dedicated to Hans Wagner, 3 Times
Champion Batsman of The National
League"

"Husky Hans" -
Lyrics 1904
Written and Composed by William J. Hartz
|
|
|
Three cheers for “Husky
Hans”
So modest in his way
Yet “He’s the star, they say
by far, of ev’ry game they play”
Then praise him long and loud
when ‘er he strikes the ball
Four we all know where ‘er they go,
our Hans is champion of them all.
