NOTES:

Published by Doubleday & Company in 1954, "The Mutual Baseball Almanac" was edited by Roger Kahn; baseball writer for the New York Herald Tribune, and Al Helfer, Sports announcer for Mutual Broadcasting's "Game Of The Day." The Mutual Broadcasting System was an American commercial radio network in operation from 1934 to 1999. From the 1940s through the 1950s, Mutual provided national radio coverage of Major League Baseball games. During this period, television sports broadcasting was in its infancy, and radio was still the main form of broadcasting baseball. In 1950, Mutual acquired the television broadcast rights to the World Series and All-Star Game for the next six years.

The Mutual Baseball Almanac" contains; statistics, records, a series of essays by the games biggest stars, diagrams of seating arrangements, and field dimensions of all 16 major league ballparks. The book also provides 1954 team rosters, 1954 major league schedules, complete official 1953 major league records and official all-time major league records.

Sportswriter Red Smith, writes about "Covering a Game" followed with Tips On Watching Baseball; "The Batter" by Stan Musial," The Pitcher" by Robin Roberts, "The Catcher" by Roy Campanella, "The First Baseman" by Whitey Lockman, "The Second Baseman" by Jackie Robinson, "The Third Baseman" Al Rosen, "The Shortstop" by Phil Rizzuto, "The Centerfielder" by Larry Doby, "The Left Fielder" by Stan Musial, "The Right fielder" by Jim Piersall, "The Manger And The Coach" by Ed Stanky, and "The Umpire" by Larry Goetz.

The following pages feature "A Concise History of Baseball" and essays on such topics as; how clubs operate, how to score a game, how to read a box score, and how to figure averages. The last hundred pages are entitled "Who's Who in Baseball" and includes statistics on the players of the time period.

The cover, both front and back, has 12 facsimile autographs of the authors that provided essays for Tips On Watching Baseball. The authors are also pictured in the book, among with the 1953 National League pennant winning Brooklyn Dodgers and the World Champion New York Yankees.
