Introduced by James Stewart and
narrated by Curt Gowdy, "Baseball
- The First 100 Years,
Official Centennial Record Album" was
released in 1969. Written by Sam
Miller, and produced by Larry Miller,
the 1960's Psychedelic style cover was
designed by American commercial
illustrator Bob Peak. He is best known
for innovative designs of the modern
movie posters that include West Side
Story and My Fair Lady. Peak received a
commission from the U.S. Postal Service
to design stamps for the 1984 Summer &
Winter Olympics. The album cover
features illustrated ballplayers from
1869-1969, with Stars Ty Cobb & Babe
Ruth. Facsimile autographs include;
Commie Mack, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth,
Walter Johnson, Mel Ott, and Rogers
Hornsby. The Record album had a $3.00
price tag.
The back of the album explains Americas
obsession with baseball the National
pastime. It states that "As you listen
to this record and re-live the great
moments of 100 years of baseball, your
memory will come alive with things you
haven't thought about for years.
Flashbacks of your youth - the kids you
grow up with - warm, lazy summer
afternoons - your favorite glove- your
first big league game - the laughter of
growing up." Whether it was Bobby
Thomson's shot heard around the world,
Don Larsen's World Series Perfect game,
or the emotional farewells of Lou
Gehrig and Babe Ruth, "You will
remember where you were and what you
were doing."
The record starts off with a 5 minute
35 second introduction by actor James
Stewart. He then hand the narrating job
over to Curt Gowdy, who finishes the
rest of the album. Side one - 26:08
minutes, spans about
70 years from 1869-1939 with some brief
audio clips and old timers talking
about the early days of baseball. Side
two - 26:45 minutes, starts off in the 1940's and
through the next 30 years to 1969.
There is also a smaller "Microsonic" version of the
recording, with a cover that measures
7"x7." The back cover states "It
is equal in quality and playing time to
a 12 LP record and can be played on all
standard phonograph equipment"
There is also a black & white paper sleeve version of the "Microsonic"
recording. This variation has the full
cover that is featured on the 12" LP
record but in black & white. The 7"
color cover is cropped. As
featured on both the front and back of
the cover, the record labels feature
the official MLB logo which was first
used in 1969.
