"Moments
before it had been Walter Johnson's
best pitch. It was about to be Henry
Aaron's 756th home run. The most
lightning fastballer the game has ever
known against the most prolific home
run hitter of all time, another classic
confrontation in an evening of classics
was about to be resolved. Babe Ruth and Tris Speaker watched helplessly as
their American team went down to defeat
in a game in which they never trailed.
Henry Aaron circled the bases one more
time...on a July night in 1982...5
years after he had hung up his cleats
for good...and one month before his
induction into the Hall of Fame. Over
12 million people heard it all. ....The
Greatest Baseball Game Never Played was
over."
"The Mythical Championship of the
universe," the brainchild of BFV&L
Promotions, brought together The
Sporting News, Apple Computer, HOF
Broadcasters Jack Buck and Lindsey
Nelson to create "The
Greatest Baseball Game Never Played."
A
1982 simulated broadcast of a
hypothetical baseball game between
all-time Major League Baseball greats.
The broadcast was aired on 200 radio
stations in the United States and
Canada and also released as a record
album.
The 30 man rosters for each
league was decided by the editors of
The Sporting News. Ballots were
prepared and published in April and
May, 1982. Using the ballots fans could
vote for those players nominated by the
editors or write in selections of their
own. The balloting produced the
starting lineups. The Sporting News
editors also named the managers,
umpires, and coaches. Casey Stengel
managed the American League and John
McGraw the National League.
The
starting lineups:
American League: Phil Rizutto, ss; Ty
Cobb, cf; Ted Williams, lf; Babe Ruth,
rf; Lou Gehrig, 1b; Rod Carew, 2b; Yogi
Berra, c; Brooks Robinson, 3b; Whitey
Ford, p.
National League: Pete Rose, 1b; Mike
Schmidt, 3b; Stan Musial, rf; Hank
Aaron, lf; Willie Mays, cf; Rogers
Hornsby, 2b; Honus Wagner, ss; Roy
Campanella, c; Sandy Koufax, p
The resulting roster was then fed
into an Apple III Computer. The
hardware and software for The Greatest
Game Never Played was provided by Apple
Computer, a leader in the field of
micro-computers. The human elements was
provided by the team managers (editors
of The Sporting News) They set the
batting order chosen by the fans, made
substations, and defensive strategies.
The computer determined the most
probable outcome in each situation
based upon the lifetime statistics of
the players involved.
Set n
Philadelphia's Shibe Park the simulated
game was announced by Jack Buck and
Lindsey Nelson. Following
the format of the All-Star Game, it
featured the National League's all time
greatest players
against the all time greatest players
from the American League. The National
League won the game 5-4 on a bottom of
the 9th walk off home run by Hank Aaron.
