Released
in 1959 by RCA Victor, the Mel Allen's
Baseball Game
uses a 33⅓ LP recorded by New York
Yankees announcer Mel Allen to
determine the outcomes of baseball
plays. "Mel Allen Makes The Calls You
Play The Game" is written at the top of
the album cover to the right of
Allen's picture. Further to the right
is the cover price of $1.98, the RCA
Victor catalog number LYB-1025,
Bluebird (a line of RCA children
records) and the RCA "Nipper the dog"
logo, and reads; "A sensational new
game you play by using this record.
Each game will be different. All the
realism and excitement of a World
Series as YOU play championship ball."
"Complete with Score Card, Rules and Playing Field" the black & white
cover art illustrates a play at the
plate. Each side of the LP has seven
tracks, for use in different game
situations. Each track has four
interleaved grooves announcing the
resulting play, leading to different
outcomes based on which groove happens
to catch the phonograph needle. The
only hitch was RCA Victor engineers
have found no way of avoiding a double
play call when there are already two
outs.

Reviews were good when the record was released, but it was noted that "hi
fi fans may object to any record which
invites their offspring to tamper with
the control arm and fool with the
needle." But, otherwise the game was
enjoyable and moderately exciting.
The back of the album cover is used as the game board.
The rules sheet instructs "How
To Play The Record" and "How To Play
With Mel Allen" It Instructs to use
small coins as batters and base
runners, on the illustrated baseball
diamond on back of album as the playing
field. Fill in the names of your
favorite players for two complete teams
of nine men on your score card which
was provided.
