A little more than a week after
manager Billy Martin was fired by the
Minnesota Twins in October of 1969,
"Ode To Billy Martin" was released. The
record reflects in song how the
Minnesota baseball fans feel about the
firing of Martin who skippered the
Twins to the American League's Western
Division championship. Joe Duffy, a
nightclub operator, put out the record
and said the proceeds from it's sale
would be used to put Martin in a better
bargaining position with his next
employer.
Side
A "Ode To Billy Martin" a novelty
country-pop song written by Richard
Colburn was recorded by The Titans on
"Duffs" Minneapolis, Minn. record
label. The Titians were the house band
at Duff's on South 8th Street from
1967-1969. Owner Joe Duffy, a
friend and admirer of Billy Martin,
commissioned Rick Colborn, lead
guitarist of the Titans, to compose the
"Ode." He also sponsored the recording
of it and the pressing of 5,000 copies
which bear a "Duff's" label.
Duffy hosted a booze-and fancy-cold-cuts press reception held at the
Radisson's Mediterranean suite in
Minneapolis to announce the records
release on Oct. 27, 1969. Martin in
attendance said he planned to promote
the record. "I'm going to promote the
record, because I used to tease Mickey
Mantle about his recording Theresa
Brewer," he said. "But I think mine was
better than his."
Side B -“Please Don’t be Angry,” by
Lorna versus The Titans. (Honky-tonk
piano-Rudy Vallee style song) Listen to
the song on YouTube from the Ode To
Billy Martin Link above.

Are You Leaving Billy
Martin?
Seems that life is just a game
You have managed to keep winning
Just to lose what you have gained.
Back to Denver, Billy Martin?
Going back to start again?
You thought that they were with you
But you didn't find your Twin.
Put your hand in your back pocket
Look 'em in the eye
Tell 'em you can't win 'em all
But you're damn sure that you tried.
Politics and poker, are part of every day
But the boys in the front office
Ain't seeing things that way.
Put a thousand sheets of paper,
With a hundred-thousand names,
tell you that we're not all thankless
And we need you just the same.
Put your hand in your back pocket
Look 'em in the eye
Tell 'em you can't win 'em all
But you're damn sure that you tried.
Are You leaving, Billy Martin?
It's a shame; It's a shame.
Are You leaving, Billy Martin?
It's a shame; It's a shame.
Are You leaving, Billy Martin?
It's a shame; It's a shame (repeat fade out)
