NOTES:

In 1956 Spalding gave away 2 free baseball 78 RPM Flexi-records with a cardboard backing to promote their line of baseball gloves. The recordings were made available free at a local sporting goods store just to show up to check out the line of Spalding Gloves. The transparent flexi record was glued to the cardboard advertising and the glue spots shows through.

The promotion consisted of two 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" records. "How To Hit" by Larry "Yogi" and "How to Field" by Alvin Dark. The record side of the Yogi Berra card, pictures Yogi in a batting pose. The back features the promotion for the Spalding 1443 official Yogi Berra catchers mitt, picturing both Yogi in a catchers squat and the mitt. The record side of the Alvin Dark card, pictures Alvin Dark in a catching the ball pose. The back features the Spalding 1035 official Al Dark fielders glove, picturing both Alvin Dark reaching for a ball, and the glove.

The Spalding baseball glove promotion records are dated to the ads appearing in 1956 newspapers, such as the one pictured below. The manufacturing method used to make the records was not introduced until 1955, ruling out the previous notion that circulated around the internet, that the records were issued in 1954. In 1955 Rainbo Records introduced a patented method to produce the flexible records as the "Record-On-A-Box" for a Wheaties promotion. Using Rainbo built and refined equipment, the company produced over 30 million records for Wheaties over the next several years. The Spalding promotions were made in 1955 by Rainbo Records so they could be shipped out and distributed to dealers by the start of the 1956 baseball season.
