During the early years, when
the American League merged with the
National League to form Major League
baseball, from about 1901 to 1915,
complimentary ticket books were used as
a promotion, to help attract fans to
the ballpark. This 1912 season complimentary ticket
book was printed for the Greater New
York Base Ball Club, the Highlanders of
the American League. It was the final
season for the Highlanders, before
being named the New York Yankees the
following year in 1913. It was also
their final season playing their home
games at Hilltop Park (1903-1912),
located on Broadway between 165th and
168th St, in Manhattan. In 1913 the
Yankees moved the franchise, renting
out playing time at the Polo Grounds from
the New York Giants.
On the inside of the cover, which is missing on this book, would have the
name & signature of the person that it
was issued to. The 20 page book,
featured 4 tickets on each page,
attributed to the numbered home games,
1 through 77. The last page with home
game 77 also had thee "Extra" tickets
to be used for an unscheduled make up
game. There would have been a
pre-designated area chosen for seating.
The top header of each ticket reads; "GREATER NEW YORK BASE BALL CLUB, of
the American League." Separated by a
line and below reads; "COMPLIMENTARY,
Season 1912, Void if detached. Good
only for game indicated." The larger
home game number in red, is indicated
over the printing. The bottom left of
the ticket has the book number. It is
believed that 100 Complementary ticket
books were printed. The book pictured
would be 97 of 100. To the bottom right
is the facsimile signature of
Highlanders President and co-owner of
the New York Highlanders, Frank J.
Farrell. Two years later in 1915, The
New York Yankees franchise was sold to
Jacob Rupert and Tillinghast Huston,
for $460.000.
Yankees Pinstripe History! By this season, the alternate nickname
"Yankees" was in very common usage by
the media. The New York Times for
Opening Day 1912 reported that "The
Yankees presented a natty appearance in
their new uniforms of white with black
pin stripes." The pin stripes were a
one-year experiment, but they would
return for good on the home uniforms in
1915. Game 1 in this ticket book
attributes to the first game the New
York Yankees franchise wore Pinstripes.
The Complimentary tickets do not
include the date the game was played.
The
1912 New York Highlanders Home Schedule
is a list of home games to attribute
the number on a ticket to the game
played.
