As advertised by A.J.
Reach, Wright & Ditson in 1927, the Babe Ruth
Home Run Special line of baseball gloves
were "designed by the Home Run King
himself." Marketed as "Big League Mitts
and Gloves for the American Boy," there
were 5 models issued; two Fielders
gloves - RF1 and RF2, two Catchers
mitts - RC1 and RC2, and one Basemen's
Mitt RB1. The larger sized boys gloves
were moderately priced "far below their
real value to give every fellow the
chance to own a big league glove."
The No. RB1 "Babe" Ruth Home Run Special signature model basemen's mitts
were made of light brown horsehide and
fitted with a hand-made asbestos felt
pad with the natural built-in
adjustable pocket. The rare "Patent Applied
For" strap-and-buckle wrist adjustment
had a protector to prevent the buckle
from rubbing the hand. The patent was
filed by inventor, Archibald J. Turner,
assignor to the Thos. E. Wilson & Co.,
on March 25, 1925. "Patent Applied For"
was removed from the strap on mitts
made at a later time, and have
a significant lower collectors value.
