NOTES:

The Benlee Sporting Goods Mfg. Co., makers of boxing gloves and equipment for boxers, was founded by Benjamin Golomb in the 1930s. In 1910, Jacob Golomb, a 17-year-old swimmer and tailor's son, started a company in the Bronx, New York City, producing swimsuits he named "Everlast." They were guaranteed to last longer than one year. In 1915, Benjamin Joined his two brothers, Jacob and Morris Golomb, in the Everlast Sporting Goods company, making boxing gloves that bore the trade-name "Everlast."

Jacob secured a patent at the time for an elastic band on swim trunks to replace the leather strap common in that era. The design caught the eye of boxer Jack Dempsey who convinced the Golomb brothers to incorporate an elastic band on boxing trunks. In 1919, Dempsey won the world's heavyweight championship wearing Everlast boxing gloves. Dempsey became a devoted endorser and Everlast soon became synonymous with boxing.

By 1923, Everlast expanded into other sports including the production of baseball shoes and uniforms. After the death of his brothers in the 1930s, Benjamin Golomb left Everlast and founded the Benlee Sporting Goods Mfg. Co. The name derived from using the first syllable of his own, and his wife's first name. His son Lester was named president and co-founder.

Benlee produced baseball gloves from about the mid 1940s-1950s. Their baseball glove designer, Larry Sternlicht, who also worked for Everlast, had made some radical innovations in glove design. Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe, asked to have a glove made large enough to conceal the arrangement of his fingers on the ball. Buddy Kerr, of the Braves, wanted a glove that would enable him to stop infield grounders better.

In 1953, Sternlicht patented a wider glove, reduced the padding in the palm and added more to the heel. He had also designed 3 and 4-fingered gloves. The 3-fingered didn't do well so he turned his attention to 4 and 5-fingered designs.

Benlee baseball glove models include: Double tunnel webs produce for the military "US 48" No. 315, and 333 (pictured here); double tunnel web Jr. Professional 347; 3 finger Starplay Professional Model 300; Professional model 310; Star League 314; Star Player Leader model 395; Fielders gloves
