Great Western Athletic Goods Company of
Chicago was primarily a uniform
manufacturer that operated out of
Chicago, Illinois. Thomas E. Wilson &
Co. Athletic Goods, wanting to establish
a niche in the uniform market, came
to a distribution agreement with Great
Western in 1925. Wilson produced Great
Western branded baseball equipment for
the GW catalog, with the GW script
logo. By the 1950s Franklin Sports
produced baseball gloves for Great
Western with the logo pictured above.
This Great Western, GW No. 200 "Fast Play Pocket" Mantle Model fielders
glove was manufactured by Franklin
Sports. In 1958 Franklin produced the
same Mantle Model, no. F125 under their
own brand. The block letter "Mantle
Model" was used because Mickey Mantle
was not under contract with Franklin,
and did not have permission to use his
full name.
The older Great Western gloves made by Wilson, with the GW script logo,
did feature player endorsed signature
models as they were under contract with
Wilson. Great western signature model
endorsed gloves include; Red Ruffing,
George Washington, No. 614, Andy Cohen,
No. 510 Wally Moses, No. 512 Jack
Salveson, No. KBO Pete Appleton, No.
516 Bud Hafey, No. 52 Joe Cicero, 528
Bob Johnson Model (Block Letter) No.
502 Rip Radcliff, and no. 505 Mel
Almada, the first Mexican ballplayer to
play in the Major Leagues.
