In 1949 Wilson changed the catalog
system from a 3 digit number to a
Prefix letter "A" followed by a four
digit number. (A2030) The Wilson A2030
Top Notch Ball Hawk -4- was introduced
in 1950, designed and constructed for
those who prefer a four finger model
over the original 3 finger design.
Patented in 1947, the 3 finger Ball
Hawk; was designed to provide a
baseball glove with a relatively deep
and effective ball catching pocket,
absorb the impact of the ball against a
portion of the wearer's hand, and aid
in the gripping of the ball.
The Wilson Top Notch model, 4 finger Ball Hawk fielders glove features;
Streamlined Kurv Form fingers, hinge
action heel, one piece Barrel web, hand
formed, grease set pocket, laced across
ends of fingers (laced fingers was a
fairly new concept in 1950, coming off
the "Split Finger" models that were
made before) asbestos felt, pad, roll
leather binding, and adjustable wrist
strap.
The back of middle-ring finger reads: "Two Fingers Here, Patent Numbers,
2231204-2414004, Canada 444892 1947"
Patent number 2231204 which is a
Streamline Finger patent, was granted
to Wilson Sporting Goods in 1941. It
was to make the fingers more rigid, and
to help prevent the fingers from
bending.
Patent number 2414004 was
granted in 1947, for the 3 finger Ball
Hawk. The 1947 Canadian patent 444892
is also for the 3 finger Ball Hawk.
