Published by Cupples & Leon in 1929, "Smitty
At The Ball Game" features Smitty, a
newspaper comic strip created in the
early 1920s by Walter Berndt.
Syndicated nationally by the Chicago
Tribune New York News Syndicate, it ran
from November 27, 1922, to 1974. The
book about the young office boy
Augustus Smith, aka Smitty, is working
for a newspaper sports department. His
photographer boss takes him to ballpark
where he meets Babe Ruth. His job
takes him to the ball park
numerous times, where he also meets
other ballplayers such as Grover
Cleveland Alexander, Rogers Hornsby.
Each page has a title at the top, relating to the four panel content below.
Same format used in the newspapers.
Each a separate comicstrip storyline.

Title: "Smitty - A Ball In The Hand Is
Worth Two Over The Fence" ...The comic
strip has Smitty wanting Babe Ruth to
sign a ball he has during batting
practice, after Ruth hit one out.

17 Title: "Smitty - First Hand
Information" ...Grover Cleveland
Alexander throws a Fast Ball and Hurts Smitty's hand.
Page 18 Title: Smitty -
Believe It Or Not" ...Rogers Hornsby
misses on purpose, leading Smitty to
believe he struck him out.
AS it turns out, Smitty is one of the earliest baseball memorabilia
collectors. He already has a Babe Ruth
autographed baseball, but fishes a
Grover Cleveland Alexander baseball
glove out of the rubbish. He then
proudly displays the glove on his
dresser, but mom tells him to remove
it. "But Ma - you don't understand."

My Glove"
The books cover depicts Smitty
approching Babe Ruth on the ball field
saying "Hello Babe - I Mean Mr. Ruth"
The title page continues the meeting
with Smitty saying "Say Babe, Listen To
'Em Cheering Us" with crowd cheering, Ruth
is now yielding a bat
on shoulder.
