NOTES:
Music composed and conducted by Bernie
Wayne; "Abner
The Baseball" A Fantasy Written and
Performed By Eddie Lawrence was
recorded on the Coral Record label in
1957. "Abner The Baseball" was also
included on the 1958 LP record album, "The
Kingdom of Eddie Lawrence. In 1960
Lawrence began a six-year association
with Paramount's cartoon Studios,
providing the voices for thirteen
animated shorts. In 1961, he did the
voice for "Abner The Baseball" a
cartoon special that aired with "The
New Casper Cartoon Show"
The story told from the viewpoint of a
baseball named Abner, in a game played
at Yankee Stadium against the Cleveland
Indians. The fantasy starts in the bottom
of the 9th with Yogi Berra up at the
plate. Abner, chosen from a bag of
balls, landed in the umps back pocket as
his friend "Sol the ball" was in the
game. Abner the baseball entered the
game after Yogi hit a hone run.
The next batter struck-out, and with the pitcher due-up in the batting
order, Mickey Mantle came up as a
pinch-hitter. Mantle Hits Abner the
Baseball out of Yankee Stadium and into
a sandlot, the worlds lonest home run.
A kid chased the ball down and brought
Abner back to the Stadium. The kid
traded Abner for $50. and a new ball.
Casey Stengel kissed Abner, before he
was shipped to Cooperstown to take his
place with all the other famous
baseballs in history.
Balls hit by the Babe, Lou Gehrig, Frankie Frisch, Ty Cobb, and Ted
Williams. Hank Greenberg, Joe DiMaggio,
Willie Mays, and Tris Speaker. And,
where Mickey signed Anber... "it still
hurts."
The Cartoon short is slightly different than the record. Side A of
the 45 RPM record, Abner The Baseball
(Fantasy) PT. 1, Side B Concluded.
