NOTES:

Words and Music By Arthur Longbrake "Brother Noah Gave Out Checks For Rain" was published in 1907 by Jos. Morris, of Philadelphia. The song is a story of Deacon Jones' novel idea to raise money to fix the leaky Church Roof. The Congregation will have a baseball game on Emancipation Day! When one member of the Congregation, his wife, Sister Jones protests to such a worldly game; “That am no game for good church folks to play,” the Good Deacon sets her straight that this idea is right out of the "Good Book."

With the alternative title "Biblical Baseball Game" the song was recorded on June 5th, 1907 by Arthur Collins, and released by Victor Records in September that same year. This double face 10 inch 78RPM record features the song "Dew Drops" by Chris Chapman on Side A, and "Brother Noah Gave Out Checks For Rain" by Arthur Collins on Side B. The  recording was also issued in a single face format (5204), and on an Edison Gold-Moulded Cylinder Record.

"Brother Noah Gave Out Checks For Rain" was also showcased in illustrated song. A type of performance art that was a popular form of entertainment in the early 20th century. Vaudeville houses would play music recordings, or use live vocalists, accompanied with still images projected from glass slides (magic Lantern). A single song was usually accompanied by 12 to 16 different images that sequentially "illustrated" the lyrics, encouraging the audience to sing along. Illustrated songs were used as a promotional tool for marketing sheet music, and the hand painted color slides would sometimes depict images from the sheet music cover art.
