"Move Over Babe (Here Comes
Henry)" is a song about Hank Aaron's
bid in overtaking Babe Ruth for the
all-time home run record. The words
were written by the Detroit Tigers
play-by-play broadcaster Ernie Harwell.
It was one of several songs he had
written in the past which included
songs that were recorded by B.J.
Thomas, Detroit rocker Mitch Ryder, and
Barbara Lewis. The music was written by
the Tigers pitching prospect Bill
Slayback (1972-1974). It took the song
writing team of Harwell and Slayback
less than an hour to write. Slayback
explained that the song was meant to be
a sing-along tune. If the melody was
too complicated, nobody is going to
sing along.
The song was also recorded by Detroit
record producer Ollie McLaughlin, a
former Ann Arbor DJ who also produced a
number of big hits. The song was
performed by Richard (Popcorn) Wylie on
the Carla Records label. Although
neither single wound up charting, Slayback’s version did become the
“official” theme of Aaron’s chase,
receiving regular airplay on NBC’s
"Game of the Week" and other TV
baseball broadcasts throughout the 1973
season and into April ’74, when
Hammerin' Hank finally broke Ruth’s
record.
The
same blank back record sleeve picturing
Hank Aaron with his facsimile autograph
was used for both recordings but with
the recording artist name appearing
below the song title. Side K-717A
features the vocal version, K-714B,
instrumental. Both recordings were
produced by Ollie McLaughlinm and
the
sheet music was published by Iramac
Music.
