Yankee Stadium, "The House That Ruth
Built," in 1923 was to undergo a major
renovation after the 1973 season. The
Yankees wanted to commemorate the great
history of the Stadium
for the fans. The Yankees turned to the
Fleetwood Recording Co. to accomplish
the goal. Fleetwood produced a
"Yankee
Stadium: The Sounds Of A Half Century"
33⅓ RPM 7" Microsonic record. On the
final game of the 1973 season,
September 30, each of the 32,238 on
hand that day received the 50th
anniversary record.
The record was a success but many fans who were unable to attend that game
wanted a copy. Fleetwood responded by
including the album in their catalogue
and issued a
12" LP record. The
following year, this Flexi-Disc
copy of the record was
produced by Eva-Tone Soundsheets, and inserted into
the 1974 Yankee Yearbook. The top of
the 1974 Yankee yearbook which features
Bobby Murcer and Thurman Munson in
caricature at Shea Stadium, reads;
"Free LP Record Inside! Yankee Stadium:
The Sound of, a Half Century - $1.50"
At the top of page 33, where the record is attached reads; "Yankee Stadium: The Sounds of A Half
Century" Instruction follow and reads;
"To Remove Record: 1. Firmly hold upper
right-hand corner of record. 2. Hold
book with free hand and slowly peel
record from book. 3 Cut along dotted
line to square off record and wipe off
any excess glue or dirt."
The Flexi-Disc itself, like the 7" vinyl record is a microsonic
compatible stereo 33⅓ RPM recording. The exclusive
Fleetwood microsonic process permits up
to three times the normal playing time.
It is equal in quality and playing time
to the 12 LP record, which features the greatest moments
in Yankee Stadium's 50 year history.
Narrated by "The
voice of the Yankees" Mel Allen, It
covers Yankee players from Babe Ruth to
Bobby Murcer; the Historic Mass for peace by
Pope Paul VI, Boxing, and Giant
Football events. Voices on the
recording include Mel Allen, Red Barber, Curt Gowdy, Frank
Messer, Phil Rizzuto, and Bob Wolf.
Produced by the Fleetwood Marketing
Group in NY, the Flexi-Disc
was manufactured by Eva-Tone.
