In a 1934 Quaker Oats promotion
Babe Ruth states; “Hey Kids! Join my baseball club -
And win one of these swell PRIZES! Just
mail your name and address with one
Quaker Puffed Wheat or Rice Box Top to
Babe Ruth’s Baseball Club P.O. BOX
1083- CHICAGO.” From May 1st to
July 15, you could win; a free trip to
New York or Chicago, Free baseballs
(900 baseballs given away every week)
or one of 100 Babe Ruth Fielders gloves
given away weekly. You also received a
Babe Ruth club membership badge for
free.
There were 1,000 Babe Ruth fielders gloves given away during this
promotion in 1934. None have surfaced
in the collectors market with a
positive ID. The lack of a model number
leads to the uncertainty that the glove
is game issued. It is very unlikely
that these gloves were issued to Babe Ruth,
and the Babe Ruth Club ads illustrate a
glove without a model number. Players
were issued gloves with a model number.
The Jury is still out, but the evidence
heavily leans towards the premium.
Two different artist illustrations were used for the Babe Ruth Club ads.
One showing "Genuine
Horsehide" in place of a model
name, the other, a Babe Ruth "Home Run
Special," which is missing the
patent information "Pat'd No. 881,315." It
is common for illustrations not
to match up with the actual glove, and
because no gloves have surfaced in the
collectors market with a positive ID there is nothing to
use for comparison.
Gloves are made in Rights & Lefts. "Full Rights," is a manufactures term
for a glove worn on the right hand for
left handed throwing players. "Full
Lefts" are regular and are used on the
left hand by players who throw with
their Right hand. Left hander store
model gloves are more rare than right
hander gloves. Only 1 in 12 gloves sold
were for left handed throwers, and only
select models were made for lefties.
Two full rights have hit the market. Both have a 1 inch web, and are
stamped "Professional" model, which
might be in reference to the ads
stating "Professional Size" Spalding
might have used overstock 1 inch webs
that were only available in full
rights, like the Babe Herman glove
shown below left. With newer style webs hitting
the market, this was also an opportunity to get rid
of out-dated glove patterns. The Babe
Ruth endorsement is placed on the small finger
side, which was first used by Spalding in 1933.
Spading Babe Ruth gloves made in 1931 and earlier, have a "Licensed Patent
March 10, 1908" stamp under the
Spalding logo. This is referring to the
"diverted seam" patent No. 881,315.
From 1932 and later "Pat'd No. 881,315"
is used. Dating the glove to and around
the time of the Quaker Oats promotion.
