The Belknap
Hardware & Mfg Co., wholesale hardware
supply co. was established in 1840.
They began by producing iron products,
such as horse and mule shoes, nails,
spikes and other forged items in a
small shop. Since 1890 their catalog
included a line of sporting goods that
included baseball gloves, that were
made over the years by manufacturers
such as A.J. Reach, The Buffalo
Leather Co., and Wilson. After 140
years of doing Business Belknap filed
for bankruptcy in 1985, and the company
went out of business in 1986.
The earliest Belknap gloves feature a Bell logo overlapped with the word
"NAP." By the mid to late 1930's
the "Belknap" script logo was
introduced. "Player Type" block letter
endorsed gloves include; Joe
DiMaggio No. D-204 & F-32, Warren Spahn
D-213, Duke Snider F-17, Alvan Dark
F-18, Mickey Mantle F-30, Willie Mays
No. F31, Nelson Fox F-33, fielders
gloves,
Lou Gehrig No. 52-F21, Ferris Fain
D-F90. Mickey Vernon F-90, base mitts,
and Jim Hegan No. D52-F42, Larry
Steinbeck D51-211, Catchers Mitt.
Beware of early Belknap gloves being sold with "Bluegrass" glove tags.
Belknap filed for a trademark on the
"Blue Grass" Brand in 1952. The "Blue
Grass" trademark was registered on
April, 27, 1954. Blue Grass was
Belknap's private in-store brand used
on numerous items. These tags were used
on any item made under the "Blue Grass"
band name, which excludes baseball
gloves.
