The Evolution of Features & Design used
to Date a Catchers Mask

Modeled after a fencing mask in
1876, Fred Thayer commissioned
a local tinsmith to create the
first catchers mask. Resembling
a birdcage the mask worn by
Thayer was the first to be used
in a professional baseball
game, April 12th, 1877. Fred
Thayer was granted a patent on
the mask in 1878, and would
officially mark the evolution
of catchers mask design.

In 1933 Arch Ward, the
sports editor of the Chicago
Tribune, put together the first
All-Star Game as a part of
Chicago's exposition that year.
From 1933-1946 the All-Star
Game managers selected the
entire lineups. Then in 1947
the fans were entrusted with
selection until 1957 when the
Cincinnati Red fans stuffed the
ballot box. Commissioner Ford
Frick stepped in and the in
1958 the balloting was taken
